Project Tikhvin began in 2012 with the blessings of His Eminence, Metropolitan Hilarion. The Project serves the Russian Orthodox Church Abroad as a resource for youth. Each year we accompany a small group of young people to Russia to assist in the restoration of ancient churches and monasteries. A work group labors in hard physical labor under difficult circumstances to help impoverished monasteries and communities. The success has been enormous and have resulted in a wonderful relationship with not only the local bishop, His Grace Mstislav of Tikhvin and Lodeynopole' and monastics and clergy but young compatriots from Russia who labor aside our youth. Lifelong friendships have developed and a lifetime of wonderful memories fill the lives of each participant.
Our group visits the holy places of northern Russia in St. Petersburg, Pskov, Tikhvin and the regions surrounding Lake Ladogs. In addition, the group visits Moscow and each year a new city chosen in advance. There are no official visits, no symposiums, no formal meetings and no guided events. There is only work and informal pilgrimage. Every year our youth see holy sights often ignored by tour groups and they live amongst the local population, taking local transportation and eating in local eateries. The goal is to experience in as real way as possible normal life for the average Russian Orthodox Christian.
Project Tikhvin provides all arrangements including air flight, local transportation, lodging and many meals. This is all arranged at a greatly reduced cost and financed by fundraising and donations.
